Choosing an Exotic Pet

There are dozens of exotic pets on the market. Even if you already have a specific animal in mind, you are not sure if you can meet its feeding requirements or if you can bring it to your home without breaking state laws.

The first thing you need to check when looking for an exotic pet to bring home is whether the kind of exotic pets is legal or not. Owning certain types of exotic pets is banned in some countries and states. Don’t ignore the law simply because you find one exotic pet particularly appealing or you will end up facing legal problems. Once you have rounded up a list of legal exotic pets, narrow your choices further using personal/ practical criteria, including:

  1. Size – Do you prefer owning a small exotic pet or a large one?  The larger the pet the more space it needs to move around. Do you have such space?
  2. Expenses – Pets need housing, food, supplies, and vet care. Expenses on care of exotic pets far outweigh cost of exotic pets. Can you meet those needs financially?
  3. Feeding requirements – Are food supplies readily available?

What You Need to Know Before Breeding Your Pet

Pet breeding can be a lucrative endeavor. However, you should have a true passion for animals to make it an enjoyable experience. If you’re solely focused on profits, all the research and work required for breeding pets will become tedious, even frustrating.

You should understand that certain responsibilities go with breeding a pet. You should be able to provide newborns round-the-clock care, for instance. If you have a regular day job and have no one to look after them for you, then breeding your pet would be a bad idea. Give careful thought as well about the expenses involved in producing healthy animals. Expenses would be towards food, medicine, vitamins, and equipment. Can you meet those needs?

Another responsible pet breeding step is making sure there’s a market or prospective owners for the animal you intend to breed. One way to determine this is to put up ads on newspapers or even your Facebook or Twitter profile. If there are no prospective owners for your pets, they might end up in animal shelters and you will end up with no profit in your pocket.

Once you have decided to breed your pet, you can start going into more specific breeding considerations such as: What is the right mating pair for your pet? Also learn about the reproductive cycle and mating habits of your pet animal to ensure greater success. However, getting your pet pregnant is only one part of the process; making sure that the baby animals thrive is the greater challenge. Take the time to learn about newborn care and if you can provide it before starting the mating process.

How to Handle Dog Health Problems

Dogs have no way of saying when something is wrong them. As a dog owner, however, you should be able to tell when your dog is having health problems. There are two general ways to detect if something is wrong with your dog. One is to observe changes in their behavioral patterns. Another is to look for changes in their physical appearance.

Pet dogs display certain behavioral patterns. They may like sitting on your lap when you’re watching evening news or bringing your slippers when you arrive home from the office. If they are ill, they might stop doing these routines, choosing to lie down on one corner instead. The slightest changes in your dog’s behavior could mean health problems, so you should not ignore these signs. Bring your pet to the vet for check up.

Another symptom that your dog is not well is loss of appetite. If your dog starts refusing to eat, check your dog’s temperature to see if it has a fever.

Diarrhea is another indication that your dog is suffering from health problems. In pups, it could be a symptom of tick fever, one of the most common dog health problems. Once you see such symptoms, bring your dog to the veterinarian.

Skin disease is another common health problem that plagues dogs. However, skin problems are not immediately visible particularly when the dog is covered by thick coat. Behavioral giveaways to skin problems include frequent scratching and vigorous shaking of heads. When bathing your dog, examine the skin for blisters or uneven patches. If there are any, bring your dog to the vet for appropriate medication.

The earlier dog health problems are detected, the better your dog’s chances of recovery. Developing an eye for symptoms of dog health problems is, therefore, a must for every pet owner.
